Health professionals recommend that we walk at least 10,000 steps a day. Surprisingly, most of us don’t make it. A lot of work requires sitting all day on their desk and some are too tired to walk that they prefer to ride even if their destination is just a walking distance. In addition, a number of entertaining gadgets and devices lure us to sit all day.
Gone are the days when walking and moving are so easy and convenient because people have no choice. For this reason, obesity becomes a major health problem and taking more steps becomes even more challenging. If you are among those who want to walk more but don’t know how to do so, here are some tips to help you keep moving and cover long distances.
1. Invest in a pedometer
This handy device is an effective activity tracker that records every step you make each time your hips move up and down. It will then translate the number of steps you walk into “miles walked” or “calories burned.”
2. Have a target
Set the number of steps that you want to achieve daily. A number of steps less than 5,000 is sedentary, 5,000 – 9,999 is somewhat active; 10,000 – 12, 4999 is active and 12,500 and more is very active.
3. Add 300 steps a day
When setting a target, you don’t have to go 10,000 steps immediately. Start moderately from your usual phase and add at least 300 steps every day. Keep a record of your daily steps until you reach the 10,000 steps a day.
4. Set a reminder
One of the reasons you make few steps a day is because of your inactivity and unawareness of your sedentary lifestyle. So, add a reminder to urge to take extra steps.
5. Walk your kids to the bus stop
If you want to walk more steps, teach your kids to get fit, by walking them to the bus stop instead of driving them there. Walking to the bus stop and back home will add extra steps to you daily goal.
6. Park far away and walk
When going to work or grocery, opt to park far away so you have to walk longer distances. In this way, you are giving yourself no other choice but walk.
7. Walk to work
If your home is only a few blocks away from your office, give yourself enough travel time to walk. Leave the keys of your car or save your budget for a cab by taking a walk. In this way, you will add more steps in your daily walk.
8. Take the stairs
If you want to achieve more steps a day, skip the elevators in the office. Take the stairs and watch how doing so will increase you daily steps.
9. Walk on the phone
When you receive a call, instead of sitting still on your desk, take the time to stand up and take a few more steps. Enjoying a long and enjoyable conversation could give you a few hundred steps without you knowing it. You can use your headset if you feel uncomfortable holding your phone.
10. Walk to your colleague if you have question
Most companies have their own medium of communication, via email, phone or instant messaging. If you want to increase your daily steps, go to your colleague’s cabin if you have a question instead of sending him or her message via Skype or Google Hangout.
11. Take a walk during break or lunch time
Plan a small walk during your break or lunch time. A few steps during you break or after taking your lunch will be a great addition to your daily step goal at the end of the day.
12. Get off the bus or train one stop away
To help you achieve your daily step target, try to get off the bus or train one stop away from your usual destination. In this way, you will add almost half a kilometer in your daily distance covered.
13. Walk with a friend, spouse or pet
Make walking more enjoyable and memorable by walking with your spouse, friend or pet. When you have someone dear to you around, the walk will be more fun and you are more likely to cover longer distances together.
14. Walk during commercial break
When you are watching your favorite show, you’re sitting for hours without recognizing the time. So take the time to stand during commercial breaks and take a few more steps.
15. Go for an evening walk
After enjoying your dinner, don’t allow yourself to sit for hours in front of the TV and wait for sleep to visit you. Take the time to go out and enjoy an evening walk with your loved ones. If you are still a thousand steps away from your goal, take this as your best opportunity to hit your target.
16. Do window shopping
If you are on a budget, don’t let this limit your activities. Roam around and do window shopping, by doing so you will enjoy the sights and forget that you’ve been walking around.
17. If you have a baby take him/her out in a stroller
Having a baby doesn’t mean that you should be at home 24 hours. Take your baby out in his or her stroller and enjoy a walk.
